New build Methodist Church incorporating community facilities
The existing church was described in “Buildings of England” as ‘A swaggering piece, set back off the street between the Market Place and the church. Fronted with a giant Ionic order, the three middle bays canted forward to form an arched porch. This was filled in with a glazed screen in the 1960s, over-fussy and spoiling the very grand effect. Interior altered but the fine gallery remains.”
The client wished to demolish the existing main Church building which had become unfit for purpose, but retain the attached Schoolroom. Following demolition, the proposal was to construct a new fully accessible, energy-efficient Church building consisting of Worship Area, Small Prayer Chapel, Fellowship Space including small café area, Meeting Rooms, Vestry and Office, with Kitchen, Sanitary accommodation and Storage facilities.
Modern churches are not the grand gestures of previous wealthier generations and social times, but offer a space which is more social than religious and as such have to operate at more diverse levels than previously. Driffield Methodist meets the brief of a modern church.
