Remodelling of Grade II listed school building and contemporary new build extension
Hessle Mount was built for a local wealthy banker called James Keiro Watson. The property existed as a dwelling until 1979 when it became Hessle Mount School. Hessle Mount has retained many features of the original design but, due to time and lack of investment in the fabric of the building, it has become tired and poorly maintained.
In 2021, Hymers College purchased the school and approached Sangwin Architects with a brief to update the facilities and remove the unsightly temporary buildings to the rear with purpose-built, modern and warm classrooms. The school had a requirement for transparency and integration and the new design achieves this by ensuring all new classrooms and main hall have large glazed areas which overlook an internal play space.
The works to the school will significantly transform the learning facilities for the children, and by using high quality materials along with good design create an enjoyable learning experience for students in the future.
