This proposed residential development provides an opportunity to improve a prominent site in the centre of Kilham and to enhance the surrounding conservation area. It comprises 41 high-quality dwellings and includes two- three- and four-bedroom houses and bungalows.
The site is adjacent to Clackna Farmhouse, a Grade II listed building. Consequently, great care had to be taken to ensure that no harm came to the setting of the dwellings and the wider Conservation Area.
In addition, as a result of the listed building, Historic England requested that new dwellings near the Farmhouse should resemble a pseudo barn conversion and be constructed from appropriate materials such as clay pantiles, simple timber windows and an appropriate heritage facing brick.
A key design element was to produce consistent building height and scale in order to blend into the surrounding area and deliver a compact form of development, which also respects the amenities of nearby dwellings.
